Student Responsibilities:
Participation
Students should take lessons year-round to attain the highest learning gains. They are also encouraged to participate in their school orchestra program, youth orchestra, and summer music camps.
Praciticing
Students should plan on practicing daily. Daily practice is far more effective than practicing a large amount in a single day.
Time: For younger students 20-30 minutes a day is a fair amount of time. For older students, 45-60 minutes a day is required. These values are approximate and student should practice the amount required to successfully prepare for the lesson. Quality is much more important than quantity.
Speed: A majority of practice should be slow (half speed) practice. Only once the music is mastered slowly should it be practiced at full tempo.
Students who do not show progress due to lack of practice or come to lessons unprepared may be dropped from the studio.
Behavior
Students enrolled for lessons are expected to behave in the same manner they would in any other educational setting. This includes respect for the personal property of others and respect for other students and faculty.
Beyond the violin
Students should frequently listen to quality recordings of classical repertoire. This includes solo violin and orchestral repertoire. Students should also learn about composers, music history, and music theory.
The Parent’s Role:
• Schedule, make payments and purchases, seek out learning and playing opportunities, provide encouragement and transportation.
• Parents are encouraged to attend the lesson with their child. Parent supervision can play an important role in student success.
• Please use email to communicate messages.
